donna-endorsed

By Melita Easters

Executive Director and Founding Chair

Georgia’s WIN List enthusiastically announces the endorsement of Donna McLeod in her race for House District 105 where she intends to unseat a two-term Republican incumbent.  She becomes the second WIN List endorsed woman hoping to flip a Republican held seat in November.

The district is in eastern Gwinnett County and includes the cities of Bethlehem, Dacula, Grayson, Loganville and portions of Lawrenceville. It is a rapidly growing area with many new sub-divisions and an increasingly growing African American population, evidence of the county’s recent well-publicized demographic shift from a long-standing majority white population.

Donna is enthusiastic and passionate about politics. A strong grassroots campaign helped her defeat a Democratic primary opponent with a 67 to 32 percent margin in May. Her General Election strategy includes a strong GOTV effort, including knocking on doors daily and on weekends with a team of volunteers. She plans several mailings and has the support of the House Democratic caucus since the district has been identified as a key target seat.

Her platform includes easing traffic congestion, restoring HOPE scholarships, introducing automated voter registration, removing obstacles to voter registration and working to promote a living wage which would allow more workers to earn middle class wages.

A native of Jamaica, she has lived in Gwinnett County for 16 years and volunteered at the grassroots level and served in appointed campaign positions long before she became a US citizen in late November of 2012.  Donna has a degree in chemical engineering and works as a quality control consultant to national and international companies who manufacture and market medical devices

Donna learned about the district as she volunteered with local and state races since 2012. She has also conducted voter registration drives, personally registering more than 5,000 voters, often from a table set up in front of a Wal-Mart on weekends. She says it is particularly meaningful to meet voters she initially registered as she campaigns door-to-door.

“We are a participatory democracy!” she says. “Our country does not work when people do not vote. If you are not registered and voting, your voice is not heard.”

She was the National Director for Voter Outreach to Black Women for Obama’s 2012 campaign after intense volunteer activities on his behalf in 2008. Her first involvement with campaigns was work for Howard Dean.

The board of Georgia’s WIN List is confident Donna will be a great team player when she joins the largest number of Democratic pro-choice women serving in any Southern legislature. Support Donna’s campaign with contributions and encouragement to voters who live in eastern Gwinnett County.
