WIN List endorsed Democratic women legislators are supporting Senate and House bills which would hold anti-abortion centers accountable and ensure Georgia women are not fooled by fake healthcare providers dedicated to stopping pregnant women from accessing needed healthcare.
Senator Nan Orrock and Representative Anne Allen Westbrook are the primary sponsors of a legislative package which has numerous additional WIN List endorsed women as co-sponsors in each chamber. The legislative package includes: SB 196 and HB 488, the Pregnancy Center Fraud Prevention Acts; SB 197 and HB 489, the End Public Funding of Misinformation Acts; and SR 207 and HR 271, resolutions which encourage the redirection of current crisis pregnancy center funding to existing programs which provide home visits to support healthy pregnancy and parenting practices.
“Georgians have a right to understand the full range of pregnancy options and to receive reliable medical information free of political bias,” Senator Orrock said in opposition to the 96 centers currently operating which annually receive more than $2 million in state funds. She said correcting the misinformation shared by these centers is essential to the health of both mothers and their babies in a state where 82 counties have no OB-GYN and 67 counties have no pediatric physicians.
“Georgia has among the highest rates of maternal mortality in the U.S., with Black women dying during the postpartum period at three times the rate of their white counterparts,” said Rep. Westbrook. “While Georgia families have barriers to accessing reproductive healthcare, prenatal care, and pediatric care, unregulated crisis pregnancy centers proliferate in Georgia. These centers are nonprofit, usually faith-based facilities dressed up as reproductive health clinics.” Click on the video above to hear more of Rep. Westbrook’s statement during a press conference about the legislation.
For 25 years, Georgia WIN List has worked to elect Democratic pro-choice Women in Numbers like Senator Orrock and Rep. Westbrook to serve under Georgia’s Gold Dome. The restoration of reproductive freedom is the lens for our endorsement process as we have helped elect more than 100 women, 53 of whom currently serve.
