Stacey Y. Abrams, 32, is Deputy City Attorney for Government Counsel, Development and Infrastructure for the City of Atlanta. Formerly, she served as Special Counsel and as a tax associate at the Sutherland Asbill & Brennan law firm in Atlanta, where her practice focused on tax-exempt organizations, with additional practice in health care matters. She also served as the founder and executive director of Third Sector Development Inc., a nonprofit management-consulting firm providing technical assistance to undercapitalized community organizations. She is currently a candidate for House District 84 in the Georgia General Assembly.

Stacey is a 2004 American Marshall Memorial Fellow, an alumnus of the 2004 Class of Leadership Georgia, the 2004 Class of Leadership Atlanta and the 2005 Class of Regional Leadership Institute. She also served as a Georgia delegate to the 2004 Democratic National Convention. In 2005, she received the Elmer Staats Award for Public Service, a national honor presented by the Harry S. Truman Foundation. She was chosen in January 2005 by Atlanta Woman magazine as one of its “25 Power Women to Watch.” She was also selected for Georgia Trend‘s “40 Under 40” list of young Georgia leaders and for the Atlanta Business Chronicle‘s “Top 50 Under 40” list of metro-Atlanta young leaders in 2004. In 2005, she was noted as one of Georgia’s Rising Super Lawyers by Atlanta Magazine and Law & Politics Magazine. This follows recognition in 2003 as one of 16 “legal phenoms” for the annual On the Rise edition of the Fulton County Daily Report, and as one of ten Outstanding Young Atlantans for 2002. In December 2001, she was featured as one of the “30 Leaders of the Future” for Ebony Magazine. Stacey was selected as a Salzburg Seminar Fellow by the international organization for her work in youth development and civic participation in 2000 and as a Freeman Fellow on U.S.-East Asian Relations in 2002 for the Salzburg Seminar. In 1994, she received a Harry S. Truman Scholarship for public service.

She has published articles on issues of public policy, taxation and nonprofit organizations. She is also an editor of and contributor to the acclaimed project Content of Our Character: Voices of Generation X-Collected Essays on Ethical Leadership in the 21st Century and the Ford Foundation project: the Youth Commission on Urban Poverty. In addition, Stacey has published several novels under the pen name Selena Montgomery. She currently has a multi-book contract with HarperCollins Publishers, and her next novel, Hidden Sins, will be released in 2006. Stacey has taught courses on law and social policy at Yale University and Spelman College.

Stacey currently serves as Chair-Elect of the Board of Directors for Hands on Atlanta, Inc., on the Board of Trustees for the Atlanta Girls School, the Chair of Women’s Legacy Group for the United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta and on the Board of Directors for the Regional Leadership Forum. She is a director on the National Advisory Board for the W.E.B. DuBois Collective Research Institute at the University of Pennsylvania, as well as a member of the advisory board of the Cole Society for Leadership Giving for the United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta, the Women’s Advisory Board for Moore Financial Group, and HSTAT-Health Students Taking Action Together. Stacey is the former President of the Board for Generation Net, Inc., a non-partisan youth political advocacy organization, which merged into MoveOn.org during her tenure in 2000.

Stacey received her J.D. from the Yale Law School in 1999. She graduated from the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin in 1998 with an M.P.Aff. in public policy. She earned a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies (Political Science, Economics and Sociology) from Spelman College, magna cum laude, in 1995.
