Rep. Ruwa Romman
HD 97
Rep. Ruwa Romman FLIPped a Republican seat and broke barriers to become the first Muslim woman elected to the Georgia House with a 2022 victory for Gwinnett County’s House District 97. HD District 97 includes Berkeley Lake, Duluth, Norcross, and Peachtree Corners in Gwinnett County.
Born in Jordan, Ruwa is the granddaughter of Palestinian refugees and her family moved to Georgia when she was 7 years old. While she was enrolled in public schools, her family worked to establish a car dealership which has operated for 25 years in Gwinnett County.
Ruwa was a recipient of HOPE and other scholarships to attend Oglethorpe University before moving on to earn her Master’s degree in Public Policy from Georgetown. She has worked to organize communities for more than a decade — helping turn Georgia blue and co-founding the Georgia Volunteer Hub which trained thousands of volunteers in 2020.
Her agenda includes “closing the economic opportunity gap, improving and fully funding public education, and ensuring everyone has access to the healthcare they need – including abortions.” She got her start in politics as an organizer – first as a volunteer for the Michelle Nunn and Jason Carter campaigns, and then moving into part-time organizing for the Muslim Voter Project.
Here are the issues important to Ruwa:
- Education: Ruwa says, “here in Georgia, education accounts for 50 percent of our state budget, yet Georgia ranks 38th in the nation and underpays its teachers. We must find permanent solutions for paying our teachers more, reinvesting in our students and tackling the threats to education head on.”
- Economic Opportunity: Ruwa is a champion of a minimum wage increase, childcare support, more worker protections, investments in infrastructure including public transit, and programs which empower small businesses.
- Healthcare: Growing up, health insurance was not always guaranteed for Ruwa and her family. She believes every Georgian deserves access to affordable and quality healthcare including access to abortions and other necessary reproductive healthcare.
- Voting Rights: While Georgia faces a decade-long assault on voting rights, Ruwa fights for our fundamental right to vote, the sanctity of our election results and to protect Democracy.
